“As long as there are postmen, life will have zest.”
– William James
Okay, so we all know that we can dispense with most practical letter writing. We can check our bank balance on our phone, pay bills online, apply for jobs in paperless portals– we’ve gone digital.
But to receive interesting letters, you must write interesting letters. That’s what this event is all about.Don’t worry if you feel like you “don’t have anything to write about” — cause it ain’t true. We all got shit on our minds– put it in a letter and send it away.
join us between 6 and 8pm at CAFE MUSTACHE on Wednesday 2/3 FOR A NIGHT OF LETTER-WRITING
Make a little time in your day for correspondence and SPOC will bring lots of envelopes and blank note cards, a shit load of pens, collage materials, rubber cement, and good old-fashioned loose leaf paper.
Here’s a list of things you might want to come prepared with:
- STAMPS – I’m not a damn post office.
- ADDRESSES – Find out where people live, and write it down. (It’s less creepy than it sounds.)
- STATIONERY – If you’re really into this sort of shit already, please bring all your kitschy, consignment-bought envelopes and postcards, your art museum gift shop stickers, and your sealing wax kit, and just shame us all with your glory.

This December, Self-Publishers of Chicago (SPoC) pays tribute to a different kind of folk hero: the Sales Associate. Join us at Uncharted Books on 12/22 for an evening of retail-Inspired horror stories, tall tales, and filthy slander– all reported directly from the trenches.

- Jeff Phillips
- Ed Blair

In the spirit of commerce, we’ll also be selling copies of a collaborative zine Tribute to the Sales Associate: A Folk Hero for the 21st Century, featuring the written work that night’s performers (and others).
It’s not too late to be featured in our zine Tribute to the Sales Associate. Submit your story to SPoC by December 16th. We’ll take drawings, lists scrawled onto receipt paper, and images of other artifacts found along the way. The stranger the better.

It’s been a pleasure serving you. Have a nice day!

A year ago a SPOC was born. After several weeks of labor, planning and advising, a group of zinesters, artists and publishers gathered to make a brand new community.
Quite a bit has happened since our first meeting. We’ve made three zines as a group: Fire Dogs, Ghostly Stories and our COLLAGE zine. We ventured through salt caves and drank pink punk cosmos. It’s been a good first year of life and it’s time to celebrate how far we’ve come.
Won’t you join us on FRIDAY, APRIL 26 from 7-9 p.m. at Uncharted Books to look back fondly and gaze forward as hopeful as a pioneer prairie dog?
Our raucous extravaganza will include:
– a zines in review performance,
– state of the SPOC updates,
– town hall question/answer session,
– and, of course,CAKE and PUNCH. We finally get our first sugar!
Join us afterward for drinks in the of-the-moment Logan Square nightclub hub.
We’re looking for readers for the evening. Did you contribute to one of our zines or just have a hankering to get up and spit your truth? E-mail selfpublishersofchicago@gmail to get on the roster.
